While exploring our theme of Space we examined the Russian abstract artist Kandinsky. We discussed and identified in his work his use of line, shape, rhythm and colour.
We identified straight, diagonal, crossing, curly, wavy, sharp, curved and bendy lines. We discovered that when a line joins two other lines it becomes a shape. With all this in mind we then created space-scapes using the same lines and shapes in found in Kandinsky's work. We hope you like some of the ones pictured here!

This week we were very busy thinking about problems, questioning the world around us and planning how we could make it better by creating our very own inventions! We were inspired after we were looked at past appliances in the home and saw how electricity and new designs and materials had improved those appliances, and our lives.
There were SO many great ideas, from waterproof robots to clear the seas of plastic to drones that hand out food to the homeless. We had so much planning these inventions, naming them and then designing them. On Friday we got to present out inventions to our classmates which was really interesting and lots of fun! Well done everyone on your engagement and participation, super proud of you all!

Parents will be invited to come see the school talent show. This form must be completed by Friday the 31st of January. We will contact parents directly to inform them of the date that class talents shows will take place. These class performances will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube so parents can watch their child's performance. If props are required, please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] to arrange to have them in class for performances! Best of luck rehearsing! We are very excited to see all the wonderful talent! This month our theme was CELBRATIONS! We had so much fun learning about lots of different celebrations, such as Hanukkah, Diwali, Christmas and birthdays. We looked at the stories behind these celebrations, and compared them to one another. We found that light versus darkness and good versus evil was a common theme throughout the stories. We looked at how these celebrations were celebrated, such as the special food eaten, the gifts given and the decorations made/put up. In our play based learning we made lots of wonderful on topic items using our junk art. We wrote about the celebrations we celebrate at home at our writing table. We used role play to act our these stories in our socio-dramatic and small work stations. We used play dough and threading boards to create scenes from the stories. We painted beautiful Menorahs using light brush strokes and contrasting light and dark colours. Finally we had the best fun experimenting with James, discovering what happens when you mix oil and water! All in all a very successful month, thank you for all your hard work, you all stuck to the theme and worked so well as part of your groups! Good job Rose and Willow class! Now go have a GREAT fun filled winter break and we will see you for more fun in term 2! In November the Rose and Willow class were learning all about Myths and Legends. We looked at the stories of Fionn MacCumhall and the Salmon of Knowledge and the Giants Causeway.
We had great fun learning all about these stories and with Hannah we were writing our own comics based on these stories. We made our own magical Salmons of Knowledge using lots of different materials at our creative station. We compared and contrasted the landscapes of Antrim and Scotland and explored this further in our construction station. With James at the investigation station we looked closely at materials and did experiments to find out which ones would dissolve, and which ones would stay as solids in the liquid. In the small world and role play station we used our knowledge of these stories to recreate our own stories using our new vocabulary and working as part of a team. And finally in our fine motor and play dough station we worked really hard recreating scenes from our stories. Well done everyone for staying on topic and on theme and for working so well as part of your groups during our Aistear stations! We are so proud of you. This month as part of learn together - exploring the equality and justice strand - we have been learning about how some people might find learning difficult in different ways.
The children had great prior knowledge, naming memory, concentration, language, speech and movement difficulties as barriers to learning. To aid some children in our school who may find language or speech difficult we have been learning lámh a manual sign system used by children and adults who may have extra learning or communication needs. Above are some of the signs we know. On Friday 22nd of November Irish National Karate champion and Olympic hopeful Caradh O'Donovan will be visiting our school. She will be leading all children in a fun fitness circuit in which we hope there will be non stop movement start to finish!
The circuit is a sponsored circuit - we ask that children bring in €3 to help raise money for new sports equipment in the school and to help support Irish athletes like Caradh to compete for our country and inspire the next generation. There are prizes for contributions more than €3 - however there is no expectation or pressure to contribute more than this sum. If you would like more info about the event please find the sponsorship booklet in your child's bag or homework folder. All information about the event can be found there or online at www.sportsforschools.org |
