As part of Social, Personal and Health Education, (S.P.H.E.) (develop important skills for living a healthy life), in November the school will be running the R.S.E. programme in all classes. The school is obligated by law to teach these topics as part of the S.P.H.E. curriculum. The topics for 1st Class are shown above. If you have any concerns about the content in these lessons, please contact us to discuss the issue.
[email protected] [email protected] Have you got maths eyes? Our class were masters in finding maths all around us. In their pairs the children found different maths concepts in the classroom and developed maths questions for them e.g. how many 2d/3d shapes can you see at our table?; how many books are their in the library/what shape are the books; how many shapes can you see on the wall etc!
Also, on our topic of spatial awareness and directional language the children made mazes using lollipop sticks and directed their partner's teddy through the maze using all their newly acquired directional language! Great integrated learning going on in the Rose and Willow Class! We have been: acting out the story of Mr Fox in role play; making fox masks in fine motor skills; identifying and naming leaves of different trees - making rubbings and labeling them like ecologists!; creating scenes from the story in sand and in small world; making fox dens and tunnel systems in junk art; and writing character profiles and wanted posters for Mr Fox in our literacy station!
As part of our November ‘Every School Day Counts’ 20 day challenge – to raise awareness in the school community – we are running a poster competition throughout the school. As a collaborative family project at home we ask that posters about why it is important to come to school our made any time from the 14th October and be submitted to class teachers no later than Wednesday 23rd October.
From all entries 4 posters (1 from Junior/Senior Infants; 1st/2nd Class; 3rd/4th Class; and 5th/6th Class) will be chosen to feature on our school website, in the weekly newsletter and be displayed at the front of the school to remind and help us all to try achieve our goal of 20 days in school for November. Attached are some examples from TUSLA to get the ideas flowing! As part of TUSLA's (The Child and Family Agency) ‘Every School Day Counts’ national attendance campaign, in the month of November, our school will we taking part in the 20 day challenge.
This attendance awareness campaign runs annually in schools across Ireland focusing on improved attendance with the aim of boosting children to get the most out of their time in education. During the month of November there are 20 school days - the aim for all children is to be in school every day each week. If children reach this goal they will receive homework passes to celebrate their family's achievement. The month will also be broken up into four 5 day segments - if a child is in 5 out of 5 days they will get 10 dojo points from their class teacher on Friday. Attached are some really helpful tips from TUSLA to help prepare ourselves for reaching our November goal. Today we finally had the weather on our side to get out and explore and observe all of the changes happening with Autumn! We did rubbings of different surfaces, materials and collected leaf samples that we will sort and identify in class. We also found a really big spider getting shelter in a dead tree!
We love learning outdoors!! This month our topic in Aistear will be Autumn and Fantastic Mr Fox - looking at all the animals in our local natural environment and how they adapt and respond to our world and to the changing of season. Well done to our new Active School, Green School, Forest School and Garden and Student council members. They all ran in a hotly contested election giving speeches, making posters and voting in private getting a real taste for real life politics!
